Racial Justice Artist RFQ! Certain Party or Parties Unknown

The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) is honored to organize Certain Party or Parties Unknown, a temporary multi-media public art exhibition furthering community dialogue about racial justice in partnership with Montgomery County’s Remembrance and Reconciliation Commission (The Commission).

“This exhibition will bring awareness to a tragic aspect of Montgomery County’s history and reflect on the challenges that still exist as we seek racial equity and social justice,” says Suzan Jenkins, CEO of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. At least three instances of lynching are documented in the county, two in 1880 and one and 1896. Of the three, two were in Rockville and the other in Darnestown. “Right now, America is being challenged to take a hard look at the horrors in this country’s history, which reverberate in experiences people in many communities have today. In light of the Senate’s inability to pass the Emmett Till Antilynching Act last year, Montgomery County must remain strong in our commitment to acknowledge and better understand our current challenges by facing the reality of our past.”

The RFQ for Certain Party or Parties Unknown is open to professional artists over 18 based in the Greater Washington region. AHCMC seeks works to be presented primarily through the media of projection (still, video, projection mapping) on public buildings. Artists are not required to have experience in projection to submit. The proposed location for this exhibition is the area of Courthouse Square in Rockville, approximately at Jefferson and Maryland avenues. This place is central to the story of racial justice in the county, specifically the three lynchings that occurred in this area. The presentation of this exhibition is planned for the first weekend in November 2021. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, all persons of color) and LGBTQ2 artists are highly encouraged to apply.

Submission deadline for Certain Party or Parties Unknown is Monday, August 2, 2021 by 11:59 p.m.
