Come watch students in Montgomery County recite their chosen poems! Winners from this round will advance to a regional competition.
Congratulations to Kari Barclay of Richard Montgomery High School, 2011 Maryland State champion! This is the second year in a row that the Maryland State champion has hailed from Montgomery County and Richard Montgomery High School. The 2010 Maryland State champion, Nora Sandler, went on to place 3rd in the National Competition.
Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Maryland State Arts Council is the local administrator.
By encouraging high school students to memorize and perform great poems, Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. This exciting new program, which began in 2005, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
