Free Forms & Faces

Opening Reception May 10, 2011 6:30PM - 8PM&8Acequia
On exhibit Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 27

“Free Forms & Faces” features three local artists working in a variety of media.  These artists were selected based on the excellence of their work.  The work of each artist was juried when each was awarded an FY2010 or FY2011 Creative Projects Grant by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County in support of their work.  The work demonstrates exuberance and passion for their chosen mediums and a willingness to freely experiment with forms and lines.

•    J. Jordan Bruns received a B.F.A. in Painting as well as Illustration at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2004, and received his M.F.A. in Painting at Indiana University in 2007.  His large, colorful abstract paintings and graphite drawings in the show focus on the cycle of growth and destruction that occurs in humanity with images derived from living and working in Florence, Italy in 2007.

•    Elyse Harrison’s lifelong passion for the visual arts has inspired this Bethesda-based artist to initiate a highly successful fine art education program, Studio Neptune, while developing her own style of surrealist art.  The three black and white, 4-foot square paintings of heads featured in this exhibit were originally produced as 5” squares.

•    Elzbieta Sikorska studied art in Poland and received a degree from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. She has been working as a n artist for many years and recently became interested in hand-made paper.  For the works included in this show, she used exclusively paper she made herself during a residency at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.  The theme of these pieces is a circle of faces, contemporary but also ancient sculptured heads, African masks and tribal painted and decorated faces.
