Integrating the Arts Lesson Planning Workshop with Shelley Johnson
May 11, 2010 -  4:30-6:30 PM
Montgomery College, Science West Building, Room 111, Rockville, MD

  • What components make a great arts integrated lesson?
  • How do you connect your art form to reading, math, social studies or science?
  • What do you want students to know and be able to do?
  • What learning environment will provide the opportunity to learn?
  • How will you know when students know it?

AHCMC present a workshop for teaching artists on effective lesson planning. You have your residency formulated, but what happens on a daily basis when you are in the classroom? Knowing how to develop and create arts integration lessons is necessary when working in today's school setting.  Attendees will create their own lesson plan outline, participate in strategies for engaging students and will brainstorm ideas to evaluate the success of the lesson.  Please join Shelley Johnson, AHCMC's arts integration Specialist, for this workshop.   Tuition: $20  Click here to register

May 13, 2010: Win the Work with Effective Marketing to Seniors and Senior Providers
Thursday May 13, 4PM - 5:PM
Cafe in the Holiday Park Senior Center, 3950 Ferrara Drive, Wheaton, Md 20906

Montgomery County has experienced a dramatic growth in its senior population, with future increases related to the aging of the Baby Boomer population. By the year 2030, seniors will make up 20% of the total population of Montgomery County compared to just 8.7% in 1980. The arts can play a huge role in improving the lives of the seniors. Research shows that physical activity and social engagement improve a senior's likelihood of remaining healthy and capable of living independently in the community.

Join this lively discussion with representatives of the Arts Education Alliance for Older Adults (AEAOA) on how to (1) identify potential opportunities to work with seniors, (2) connect with senior providers and (3) what makes a winning proposal to win the work. Carol Fuentevilla of Holiday Park will discuss connecting with senior service providers and what they may be looking for in an artist.  Meredith Forster of Glen Echo Park will discuss the key points to crafting a proposal that lands YOU a teaching gig.
